DataAnnotation for developers — FAQ

Last reviewed June 2026

What programming languages do they use?
Coding projects span many languages — commonly Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, SQL, Java, C++, Go, and Rust. The more you're comfortable with, the more projects you can qualify for, but being strong in one mainstream language is enough to start.
Do I need a CS degree?
No. There's no degree requirement. Demonstrated coding ability and clear technical writing matter far more than credentials — self-taught and bootcamp devs do this work too.
How much does it pay developers?
Coding and technical projects commonly pay $40–$75+/hour, with specialized work higher — well above the general non-coding tasks. See the pay guide.
Is it free to join?
Yes — always free, and no legitimate step asks you to pay. Anyone asking for money "to get started" is running a scam.
How and when do you get paid?
Via PayPal. Work is reviewed (often within a few days), and approved earnings can usually be withdrawn frequently.
Can I do this alongside a full-time dev job?
Yes — it's fully remote with no fixed schedule or minimum hours, so most people treat it as flexible side income they pick up when they have time.
What's the assessment like for developers?
A starter assessment screens reasoning and writing; a coding qualifier unlocks the technical projects. Both reward correct, well-explained work — see our coding assessment guide.
What countries can join?
Historically the US, UK, Canada, Australia and a few others. Eligibility can change — confirm on the official site when you apply.
Is it a scam?
No. It's run by Surge AI and has paid contractors millions. The real caveats are that acceptance is selective and work volume varies — see is it legit?
Is the coding work steady?
Not always. Project availability rises and falls, so it's best treated as flexible income rather than a guaranteed full-time wage.
